Why I came to Mizzou: One of the best photo programs
What Id tell future Mizzou students: I would tell them that the photo teachers here are excellent. You will learn more than just the technical aspects of a good picture. They emphasize individual style, rather than mandating a textbook approach to photography. The Mizzou Mafia is a pretty accurate nickname for the network of J-School graduates; the connections are great. Plus, what other school gives you behind the scenes access to Pictures of the Year International (POYi) and College Photographer of the Year (cPOY)? Be prepared to dedicate yourself to your classes.
Why I became a photographer: I went cross-country for three months and loved keeping a daily journal and taking pictures. I decided photography was the best way to pursue traveling. I love learning, and photography offers learning opportunities. It forces me to keep an open mind, it stretches my imagination, and it challenges my creativity.
Favorite type of photography: Travel photography; any photography that puts me in a unique and interesting situation that I wouldn’t normally encounter.
Favorite part of this project: Flying in a helicopter for the aerial shots. Climbing the rock wall at the rec complex. I love how photography gives me the opportunity to do things that I would never otherwise be able (or find the time) to do. And I get paid for it! I liked the creative freedom of some of our assignments … And last but not least, I assisted the professional photographer that the school brought in, and he liked me enough to hire me for the next six months. (See? It’s all about the connections.)
What I do with my free time: When I’m not out taking photos, I’m usually toning them. Or trying to learn the nuances of Photoshop. Or working on my portfolio. Or making photo albums for family events. I try to squeeze writing in there every now and again, and even more rarely, reading a book.
Favorite thing to do in Columbia: Probably chill at the Cherry Street Artisan with friends or coffee (and sometimes both)
Ideal job: Traveling, and getting paid for it
