Elie Gardner

Graduation year: 2006 (undergraduate)

Hometown: Carrington, N.D.

Why I came to Mizzou: Because it is a solid state school with many good programs, including journalism, which was my area of interest. Mizzou also gave me a generous amount of scholarship money.

What I'd tell a future Mizzou student: I think of Columbia as an oasis in Missouri. You can find cultural events and so many interesting people that would not be in Missouri if it were not for the University.

Why I became a photographer: I like to introduce people to parts of the world that they would not see without journalism. I like to expose people to new ideas, religions, struggles and philosophies that they might not discover without journalism. I like to challenge people to know others not like themselves.

Favorite type of photography: Feature pictures and extended stories. I like to get to know my subjects on a personal level so I can best tell their stories.

Favorite part of this project: The whole experience has introduced me to new things and programs at Mizzou.

What I do in my free time: Read, talk, travel, explore new places, speak Spanish

Favorite thing to do in Columbia: Drink mocha chai at the Cherry Street Artisan and relax

Ideal job: I'd like to work for a mid- to large-circulation daily and take photos, lots of photos!
