Why did you choose MU?
I’m a sponsored student and the oil company who sponsors me recommended Mizzou as a good school for my field — electrical engineering. I heard Columbia was really nice and that the people here were nice, too. A friend of my dad also graduated with his master’s degree from Mizzou about 20 years ago and encouraged me to come here.
Describe your experience at MU.
I’ve never lived in a small town before; I’m a city boy, so that was different for me. I had to get used to a different culture. I had to get used to the language. I also had to get used to eating at different times. Back home, I usually don’t have lunch until three and dinner until nine. A lot of little things are different.
Were there any programs or services that you found particularly helpful?
The International Center helped me a lot at the beginning with figuring out classes and helping with my passport and visa.
Are you involved with any activities or clubs?
The International Club allows you to interact with other international students and American students, too.
How do you like Columbia?
I like Columbia. I feel really safe here. Since it’s a college town, it’s easy to find friends and interact with other people.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Many international students experience culture shock when they first move here, and they can be shy because of that. My advice is to just get out there and interact with others — don’t be shy. Join organizations and clubs. There’s a lot to do at the University and in Columbia so you won’t be bored. Also, study every day. |
