Why did you choose MU?
I have always wanted to be an engineer, so my dad thought it would be better if I studied in the U.S. My brother had attended Lincoln in Missouri, and he suggested I go to MU.
Describe your experience at MU.
When I arrived here, everything was new to me. The food was different, and so was the weather. I had to get used to a completely new culture.
Were there any programs or services that you found particularly helpful?
I joined the Freshmen Interest Group (FIG) for Women in Engineering. That’s how I made a lot of my friends. FIGs are a good option for international students.
The International Center has lots of programs that are helpful to international students. They help you get used to the new culture and meet people. They also assist international students seeking on-campus jobs since they can’t work off-campus.
Are you involved with any activities or clubs?
I’m publicity chair with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). I’m also the Web page manager for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and a member of the Mizzou Engineering Students Council (MESC).
How do you like Columbia?
Columbia is kind of small but I feel safe here. The downtown area is very close to campus, so one doesn’t need a car to get around.
Do you have any advice for prospective students?
I would advise incoming freshmen to join a FIG. Also, get to know the International Center and the programs they offer. They’re always very helpful. The Student Success Center offers help and tutoring if one needs it.
Get involved as much as you can. It’s fun and there are lots of choices on campus. Also, it’s always good to balance your academic and social life while in college. |
