Being the best, the most dynamic and at the leading edge of
technology may be hard for some, but Mizzou’s School of
Journalism has been able to maintain this position since its
founding in 1908. It’s no wonder that we claim
generations of top-notch journalists and communicators among our
alumni — people such as CNN Headline News
anchor Sophia Choi, deputy managing editor Barney Calame of the
Wall Street Journal, and scores of other accomplished
practitioners. (See our success stories: Visit the journalism school site and search on
“profile.”)
How do we do it? The “Missouri
Method” — backed by our terrific
facilities — is key. The method is the
foundation of our teaching, and it’s based on the notion
that students learn by practicing journalism as well as by studying
it.
Other important components:
The Columbia Missourian
We don’t have a weekly campus newspaper; we have a daily
community paper. Students staff the Columbia Missourian, and
experienced professors serve are their editors and supervisors.
KOMU-TV — our NBC affiliate
newsroom
Our commercial television newsroom is the only NBC affiliate where
students work as reporters, producers and videographers. More about
KOMU-TV …
Vox and Global Journalist
Magazine students will hone their skill at Vox, a weekly
city magazine, or Global Journalist, a professional
quarterly. More …
Our Faculty
They are teachers, scholars and researchers —
more than 80 full-time experts, leaders of news organizations and
advertising agencies, nine endowed chairs and professorships,
authors of national textbooks, Pulitzer Prize winners and more.
