Academics
Jim Spain

Interim assistant dean of academic programs and associate professor of dairy nutrition
College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources

Three classes he teaches: AS 1011: Introduction to Animal Science, AS 2165: Ruminant Production, AS 2111: Societal Issues and Animal Agriculture (Sophomore Seminar)

Favorite class: No favorite; he enjoys the unique challenges each class offers. With Introduction to Animal Science, he likes seeing how students extend their knowledge of high school biology to animals they haven’t considered before. With Ruminant Production, he guides students as they apply their knowledge to practical situations. And in Societal Issues and Animal Agriculture, he enjoys leading students as they explore emotionally charged issues.

Area of research: Dairy cattle; he studies how to foster their welfare through nutrition and farm management.

His claim to fame: He helped develop the “100-day contract,” a farm management technique that helps dairy cows remain healthy and productive throughout the transition from pregnancy to milk production.

The most common concern for freshmen: A lot of new students are concerned about how big Mizzou is. But once they get into their classes and social activities, Spain says, they see that it’s a large campus, but a small community.

Advice for new students: Don’t worry that Mizzou will be too hard. If you weren’t ready, Mizzou wouldn’t have selected you. Look for a major that excites you, and then use your time wisely.

Why he loves to teach: Spain says his college professors showed him how a teacher can have a positive impact on students. He works hard be that kind of teacher to his students.

What Mizzou students are like: In a word, fantastic. Spain is amazed by their energy and diversity. From classical pianists to rodeo riders, his students bring a variety of experiences to the classroom. He never tires of learning about their different backgrounds, goals and talents.
